Armenia, Sonsonate : ウィキペディア英語版 | Armenia, Sonsonate Armenia is a municipality in the Sonsonate department of El Salvador. The municipality is estimated to have over 24,000 residents.() ==History== The name of this town was originally "Guaymoco" in ancient Pipil dialect of Nahuat and means "the oratory of the frogs". Even though nobody knows for sure when or where the name of Armenia was originated, there is a story which says that when the first Spanish settlers were passing by on the road from Tazumal they have encountered many natives who they requested to show them any edible birds or animals. Natives pointed at the nearby dormant volcano and described a black and red feathered bird later known as turkey. Hence the name that was passed from one generation to another until the name was officially given. The current mayor is Carlos Rivera Molina (ARENA). Molina was first elected in 2002, taking the place of Moises Alvarado of the FMLN, and was re-elected to a second term in March 2006.
